If you've read my blog for very long, you know that I believe strongly in taking the time for spelling instruction. Yeah, that dreaded word. Spelling. But spelling doesn't have to be boring and dry. It can actually be pretty hands-on and dare I say it…fun. Spelling games, like our Word Bump! games, always make spelling a little more palatable for kids.
Spin and Spell will help your students practice the spelling words that are introduced in the first grade Reading Street Common Core (2013) reading series. This supplement includes one page for each of the 30 stories included in Units 1 thru 5 in this Scott Foresman series. Using a paper clip. Spin and Spell works with short vowel words. This fun activity encourages child to listen for the sounds of words and spell them out. Most child love to play games and play way method is the best approach for teaching. In the Spin and Spell game, child can use a paperclip and pencil or a spinner to.
- Spin Flax is a Lunar spell requiring level 76 Magic to cast. The spell spins flax into bow strings, spinning 5 flax and gaining 75 Magic experience, in addition to 15 Crafting experience per flax spun for a maximum of 75 Crafting experience per cast. The spell can be cast once every 5 game ticks.
- Spin and Spell Slot Review. Spin and Spell is the Halloween-themed slot you've been looking for. Filled with ghouls, witches, vampires and all things spooky, it's a veritable feast for anyone with a penchant for the macabre! Spin and Spell is a 5-reel, 20-payline video slot powered by software from BGAMING. Symbols include 3.
- Spin and Spell offers the option of allowing students to select a picture of what they want to spell or it will select a random word for them to spell. If the student is having difficulty spelling a word, they can click on 'show me the word' and it will be displayed on the wheel. This is a simple, easy, and fun way to practice spelling.
In our Short Vowel Activity Pack, you'll find a Spin & Spell game for CVC words; and today, I'm sharing a FREE Long Vowel Spelling Game {CVCe words}, too! Please note that the printable can be found at the end of this post. Thanks!

Long Vowel Spelling Game
This long vowel spelling game is designed for you to simply print and play. No cutting or gluing involved! Yay! Kids can play by themselves or 2 player can play using the same game board but different spelling grids. As a solo game, kids spin and spell until the first column reaches the top. As a 2 player game, it doesn't have to be a race; just a fun way to spin and spell those long vowel words.
Materials:
- Game board of choice {choose from 6 different game boards}. I like to print my boards onto cardstock for some durability. The boards can be slipped into a plastic sleeve protector or even laminated.
- Spelling grid. This can be printed onto plain copy paper. If you have more than one player, each player needs their own spelling grid.
- Pencil
- Paper clip, safety pin, or spinner of choice
- cookie sheet & Power Magnets {optional}
How to Play:
1. The player first spins a vowel on the Long Vowel Spinner wheel. The choices are long a_e, long i_e, long o_e, long u_e, or ? {the ? column has a mix of long a, long i, long o, and long u images.} I did not include long e_e as there are not enough words with that pattern in the English language. And good luck finding clip art for the ones we do have! 🙂
2. When the spinner stops on a particular long vowel pattern, he locates that vowel column on the game board. He goes to the first image in the column, identifies it {there is a picture key in the download}, then spells the word on his spelling grid. Play continues like this, with the child spinning the spinner and spelling words from that particular long vowel column.
3. If you have your game board on a cookie sheet, kids may also enjoy covering the long vowel word they've spelled with a Power Magnet to keep track of their spot, but this is completely optional. {My Kindergartner loves our Power Magnets, so it was a must for him.}
4. The long vowel pattern that reaches the top of the grid first is the winner! OR to make the game last a little longer {and sneak in more spelling practice…hehe}, you may have your child play until he has his entire board filled up. That's up to you!
